Namibia is rapidly establishing itself as one of Africa’s most promising green energy destinations. Blessed with some of the world’s highest solar irradiation levels, strong coastal winds, vast open land, and access to Atlantic shipping routes, the country is leveraging its natural advantages to build a green hydrogen industry that could reshape its economy. Rather than exporting raw natural resources alone, Namibia is pursuing a strategy centred on renewable energy, green industrialisation, and value addition, positioning itself as a future supplier of clean fuels to global markets.
Green hydrogen, produced by splitting water using electricity generated from renewable sources, is increasingly viewed as a critical component of the global energy transition. It offers a low-carbon alternative for industries such as steel, shipping, fertiliser production, and heavy transport, sectors where reducing emissions remains particularly challenging. As demand for clean energy solutions grows, countries with abundant renewable resources are emerging as key players in this new market.

Namibia has moved quickly to seize this opportunity. Through its National Green Hydrogen Programme, the government has made green hydrogen a central pillar of its long-term development strategy. The initiative aims not only to produce hydrogen for export but also to stimulate industrial development, create jobs, attract investment, and expand renewable electricity generation across the country.
At the heart of this vision is the Hyphen Hydrogen Energy project in the ǁKaras Region, one of the largest planned green hydrogen developments in the world. The project is expected to attract investments exceeding US$10 billion, with production focused on green hydrogen and green ammonia for export to Europe and other international markets. Supported by the Namibian Government and strategic development partners, the project is progressing through environmental assessments, infrastructure planning, and investor engagement.
The economic potential extends far beyond energy exports. Namibia sees green hydrogen as the foundation for a broader industrial economy. Government officials estimate that the emerging sector could create tens of thousands of jobs during construction and long-term operations while supporting new industries in manufacturing, logistics, engineering, and technical services. Recent government projections indicate that green hydrogen could generate up to 30,000 employment opportunities as projects gather pace.
Infrastructure development is already following this momentum. The government has established the TSAU KhaEB Special Economic Zone to support green hydrogen investments, providing a dedicated regulatory and industrial framework for companies involved in renewable energy and green manufacturing. At the same time, upgrades to the Port of Lüderitz and surrounding transport infrastructure are expected to improve export capacity while strengthening Namibia’s role as a regional logistics hub.
Namibia’s ambitions also align with Africa’s broader industrialisation agenda. Rather than exporting renewable energy alone, the country is encouraging investment in downstream industries such as green ammonia, synthetic fuels, and mineral processing. This approach reflects a wider continental shift towards adding value locally instead of exporting raw materials, creating skilled employment and increasing domestic economic returns.
The country’s progress has attracted growing international interest. Development finance institutions, private investors, and governments are supporting Namibia’s efforts through financing, technical cooperation, and infrastructure partnerships. Earlier this year, the African Development Bank approved US$10 million to support the Hyphen project, describing it as a strategic investment capable of positioning Namibia among the world’s pioneers in green hydrogen production.
International partnerships continue to strengthen Namibia’s position. During President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah’s state visit to China in July 2026, Namibia secured agreements covering energy, infrastructure, mining, and green minerals, while reaffirming its commitment to local processing, technology transfer, and skills development. These partnerships are expected to support the country’s wider economic diversification strategy alongside green hydrogen.
Challenges remain. Large-scale green hydrogen production requires significant investment in renewable electricity generation, water infrastructure, transmission networks, and export facilities. Global demand is also still developing, while project developers must secure long-term buyers before reaching full commercial production. Maintaining policy certainty, environmental sustainability, and community participation will be essential to ensuring the industry’s long-term success.
Nevertheless, Namibia’s progress demonstrates how Africa can transform its natural advantages into industries that create lasting economic value. By combining renewable energy, industrial development, and international partnerships, the country is moving beyond its traditional role as a commodity exporter to become a producer of next-generation clean energy solutions. As global economies pursue carbon neutrality, Namibia is positioning itself not simply to participate in the green transition, but to help lead it.
