Africa’s AI Moment: Building the Infrastructure for the Next Digital Economy

Africa’s artificial intelligence opportunity is moving beyond conversations about digital skills and applications. The continent is beginning to build the physical infrastructure required to power the next generation of AI services.

 

Egypt is emerging as an important example. A partnership involving Vodafone Business, Elsewedy Electric and Cassava Technologies is establishing one of Egypt’s largest data centres and the country’s first sovereign AI data centre. The project is expected to begin with 20 megawatts of capacity, with plans to scale to 200 megawatts.

The investment is expected to attract US$200 million initially and potentially reach US$1 billion upon completion, while creating up to 200 direct and 2,000 indirect jobs. The facility will provide advanced computing infrastructure, including GPU-as-a-Service, supporting government and business applications.

 

This development matters because AI leadership increasingly depends on infrastructure. Data centres, reliable electricity, cloud computing and high-speed connectivity are becoming as important to the digital economy as roads, ports and industrial parks are to traditional commerce.

 

Africa has a strategic opportunity to build this infrastructure around its own needs. Sovereign and locally hosted data facilities can strengthen data governance, improve access to computing resources and enable African businesses and institutions to develop AI applications closer to the communities they serve.

 

The opportunity is continental. Across Africa, data-centre investment is expanding as demand for cloud services, digital payments, artificial intelligence and online businesses grows. The World Economic Forum has highlighted the need for African countries to develop power and digital systems together as the AI economy expands.

 

For Africa, this is also an opportunity to move from being primarily a consumer of digital technologies to becoming a builder of the infrastructure behind them.

 

But the AI opportunity must be matched by investment in energy. Data centres are power-intensive, making reliable and increasingly renewable electricity essential. Without sufficient power generation and transmission infrastructure, Africa could struggle to capture the full value of the digital boom.

 

The continent will also need more engineers, data scientists, cybersecurity specialists and entrepreneurs capable of transforming computing capacity into commercially valuable solutions.

 

The resolution is this: African governments should treat AI infrastructure, reliable power and digital skills as interconnected strategic priorities. Investors should look beyond consumer applications towards the infrastructure that will support Africa’s digital economy. If the continent builds the foundations now, AI can become not merely another technology Africa adopts, but an engine of African innovation, enterprise and economic transformation.
