Angolan Court Rejects Opposition, UNITA’s Claim To Annul Election Results

  • 0

Angola’s constitutional court has rejected the opposition party’s claim seeking to annul the victory of the ruling Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) in the just conducted general elections.

Recall that the opposition National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) filed a petition challenging the outcome of the presidential election after the country’s electoral commission last week declared the governing MPLA as the winner of the national election.

But the ruling said UNITA’s complaint did not meet the requirements to allow the legal body to annul the results.

It added, “UNITA used a procedure reserved for situations in which there are no other means intended to safeguard the useful effect of the alleged rights and therefore the claim was dismissed”.

However, the electoral commission’s results last week gave the MPLA 51.17% of the total votes cast and UNITA 43.95%.
