Iran President’s Death: Reactions from African Leaders

Across Iran, citizens gathered in the streets to mourn the loss of their president and his companions. In a tragic incident, the helicopter carrying Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi, and the Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian crashed near Azerbaijan on the 20th of May 2024. The crash resulted in the deaths of a total of nine individuals, including the flight crew. The high-ranking officials were returning from a ceremony in Azerbaijan where they had inaugurated a dam alongside the Azerbaijani president. The helicopter reportedly encountered severe weather conditions, including heavy fog, which forced a “hard landing” in the mountainous region.

The Nigerian President extended his heartfelt sympathy to the Iranian people, assuring the country of Nigeria’s strong support and prayers.

 

The Egyptian President offered condolences and expressed sorrow over the tragic loss. He emphasized the importance of maintaining regional stability and continuing the dialogue and cooperation established during the late president’s tenure.
