Dr. Jessie Kabwilam, Member of Parliament (MP) representing Salima North-West constituency, on a two-week Parliamentary session in Edinburgh, presented a proposal in Scottish Parliament seeking for ideas that will push for more inclusion of African women in leadership. This proposal also embodies a desire for measures on how to sustain women Parliamentarians seats during elections.

Kabwila is Southern African Development Community (SADC) Parliamentary Women Caucus Chairperson, who also claimed that following the motion tabled at the Scottish Parliament she has gained insights to develop strategies for the retention program in SADC region.

“I have come here on the invitation of the Scottish parliament. The party hosting us is the Scottish Nation Party (SNP). The objective is for Malawi parliament women caucus to share experiences with other women caucuses and see how Scottish parliament can help.

“On Thursday I tabled a motion that aims to invigirates ideas to reduce numbers of women in Parliament as the main headache facing us. Retention in SADC parliamemts remains a challenge due to poor implementation of laws and poor service delivery crippled by corruption and patronage,” said Kabwila.
