New Ebola Case Confirmed in Eastern Congo

Democratic Republic of Congo’s National Institute for Biomedical Research said it has confirmed a new case of the Ebola virus in the city of Beni in the eastern part of the country.

It also stated that Genetic sequencing has linked the development to the 2018-2020 outbreak in North Kivu province which killed about 2,300 people.

The national institute disclosed this in a statement to newsmen added that Ebola could sometimes linger in the eyes, central nervous system and bodily fluids of survivors and flare up years later.

The World Health Organization said authorities were investigating a suspected Ebola case after a 46-year-old woman died in Beni, yet showing consistent symptoms of the disease.

It was, however, revealed that Congo’s dense tropical forests are a natural reservoir for the Ebola virus, which causes fever, body aches, and diarrhoea.

But the country has recorded 14 outbreaks since 1976.
