As Africa accelerates its transition to cleaner and more reliable energy sources, Kenya has emerged as a continental leader in geothermal power. Blessed with abundant geothermal resources along the Great Rift Valley, the country has successfully harnessed underground heat to generate affordable, low-carbon electricity that now powers homes, businesses, and industries. Through sustained government investment, strategic public-private partnerships, and long-term energy planning, Kenya is demonstrating how renewable energy can drive inclusive economic growth while strengthening energy security.
Today, Kenya ranks as Africa’s largest producer of geothermal energy and the world’s seventh-largest geothermal power producer. According to the Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen), the country has an installed geothermal capacity of approximately 984 megawatts (MW), providing between 40% and 45% of the nation’s electricity. This remarkable achievement has significantly reduced Kenya’s dependence on imported fossil fuels while making its electricity supply more stable and resilient.

Unlike solar and wind energy, geothermal power provides electricity around the clock. It is not affected by changing weather conditions or seasonal variations, making it one of the most reliable renewable energy sources available. This consistency has enabled Kenya to build a more dependable electricity grid capable of supporting industrial growth, digital infrastructure, and expanding urban centres.
Kenya’s success is closely linked to its unique geography. The Great Rift Valley, which stretches through the country, is home to extensive underground geothermal reservoirs created by volcanic activity. These natural heat sources produce steam that can be extracted through deep wells and used to drive turbines that generate electricity. Major geothermal fields such as Olkaria, Menengai, and Baringo-Silali have become the backbone of Kenya’s renewable energy sector.
Government policy has also played a decisive role. Recognising the high risks and costs associated with geothermal exploration, the Kenyan government invested heavily in early-stage resource assessment and drilling. By reducing exploration risks, it created an attractive environment for independent power producers and private investors to participate in electricity generation. This public-private partnership model has accelerated project development while limiting investment uncertainty.
Institutions such as the Geothermal Development Company (GDC) have been instrumental in this process. Established to undertake exploration and steam development, GDC prepares geothermal fields before private developers build power plants. This approach has helped attract investment while speeding up the expansion of geothermal capacity across the country.
Kenya is now looking beyond electricity generation to maximise the economic value of its geothermal resources. Direct-use applications are becoming increasingly important, with geothermal steam supporting greenhouse farming, food processing, milk pasteurisation, fish farming, and industrial manufacturing. These applications lower production costs, improve efficiency, and create additional employment opportunities in sectors beyond energy.
The country is also exploring geothermal energy as a key resource for producing green hydrogen and green ammonia. As global demand grows for low-carbon industrial products and clean fuels, Kenya’s geothermal resources could support new industries while positioning the country as a regional hub for sustainable manufacturing and clean energy exports.
The environmental benefits of geothermal energy are equally significant. Compared with fossil fuels, geothermal plants produce very low greenhouse gas emissions while occupying relatively small areas of land. Increased geothermal generation has helped Kenya reduce carbon emissions and advance its climate commitments under the Paris Agreement. It has also improved energy security by reducing exposure to volatile global oil prices and imported fuel supplies.
Kenya’s National Geothermal Strategy 2026–2035 reflects the country’s long-term commitment to expanding this renewable energy source. The strategy aims to increase installed geothermal capacity to approximately 1,413.5 MW over the next decade, strengthening electricity access while supporting industrialisation, manufacturing, and economic diversification. Achieving this target will require continued investment in exploration, transmission infrastructure, financing, and technical expertise.
Kenya’s experience also offers valuable lessons for other African countries located along the Great Rift Valley, including Ethiopia, Djibouti, Tanzania, Rwanda, and Uganda, all of which possess significant geothermal potential. By adopting supportive policies, investing in early exploration, and encouraging private-sector participation, these countries can unlock clean energy resources that have remained largely untapped for decades.
As Africa seeks reliable solutions to meet rising energy demand while advancing climate goals, geothermal power is becoming an increasingly important part of the continent’s renewable energy mix. Kenya has shown that with strong leadership, strategic investment, and sound policy, geothermal energy can become a powerful driver of inclusive development.
Far more than a source of electricity, geothermal energy is helping build resilient economies, attract investment, support industrial growth, and create cleaner, more secure energy systems. Kenya’s leadership in geothermal development demonstrates how Africa’s natural resources can be harnessed responsibly to power inclusive growth while contributing to the global transition towards a low-carbon future.
