ABO Capitala leading international investment firm headquartered in Angola with holdings throughout the world, held a competitive educational essay contest and awarded a student from Johns Hopkins University a scholarship for one full semester of college and a five-night all expenses paid trip to Angola. In addition to the selected winner, two runners-up also received the trip to Angola.

“Education is a key investment for ABO Capital because education is the foundation for success,” said Mr. Campos, CEO of ABO Capital. “We decided to sponsor this scholarship to give back to students interested in Africa. Today’s students have so much potential that if we give back to them now, they will give back to the continent when they find their success.”

More than 500 students submitted essays detailing how they would change Africa to improve the world. Students had to demonstrate their knowledge of Africa and explain their conceptual ideas for tapping into its economic potential and bettering the continent.

The selected scholarship winner, Nathaniel Kado, is a student of The Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University. His essay focused on Africa’s food insecurity and how technology could make an impact by helping to generate income for farmers, reduce food aid dependence, and better the lives of people across the continent.  Runners-up included Dusabimana Emmanuel who is earning his Bachelor of Science in Agri-Entrepreneurship and Communication Management from Gulu University and Gbolhan Animasaun who is earning his master’s degree in international finance and economic policy from Columbia University. They wrote about using technology to improve agriculture and intercontinental travel and trade, respectively.

In order to be eligible, participants had to be 18 years or older and currently enrolled in undergraduate, graduate, or university program to enter. The winner received one full semester of college, up to $30,000 and the winner and two runners-up will be going on their all expense trip to Angola in 2019.
