Africa’s Energy Boom: Record Growth in Solar, Wind and Clean Power

Africa is entering an important period in its energy story. Across the continent, solar panels are appearing on rooftops, wind farms are expanding, geothermal projects are supplying electricity, and new mini-grids are bringing power to communities that have long remained outside national electricity networks.

 

The change is particularly significant because Africa has enormous renewable energy potential, yet millions of people still lack reliable access to electricity. The continent receives some of the world’s strongest sunlight, has considerable wind resources and possesses large geothermal and hydropower potential. Turning these natural advantages into dependable electricity could have a major impact on households, businesses and industries.

The progress is already visible. The International Energy Agency reported that renewable capacity additions in both sub-Saharan Africa and North Africa reached around 12 gigawatts, with solar, hydropower and wind among the main contributors.

 

Solar power has been one of the biggest drivers of this growth. Africa recorded its strongest year of solar photovoltaic expansion in 2025, adding about 4.5 gigawatts of new capacity, representing a 54 per cent increase from the previous year. Countries including South Africa, Egypt, Algeria and Nigeria are among those helping to drive the continent’s expanding solar market. For Africa, the significance of renewable energy goes well beyond the climate debate. Reliable electricity is essential for economic development.

 

A small business cannot operate efficiently if it has to cope with constant power cuts. A hospital needs dependable electricity to keep medical equipment running. Schools need power for computers and internet access, while farmers increasingly require electricity for irrigation, refrigeration and food processing.

 

This is why renewable energy is becoming an important part of the continent’s development strategy.

 

Solar mini-grids are particularly promising. Instead of waiting for large national electricity networks to reach remote communities, mini-grids can generate and distribute power locally. They can provide electricity to homes, shops, schools, health centres and small businesses, creating economic opportunities in places that have historically been underserved.

 

Kenya offers an encouraging example of what is possible. The country already generates the vast majority of its electricity from renewable sources, with geothermal power playing an especially important role. Kenya has also continued to invest in wind, solar and hydropower as it works towards expanding electricity access and supporting economic growth.

 

Other countries are pursuing different combinations of renewable resources. Morocco has invested heavily in solar and wind power. Egypt is expanding solar and wind capacity, while Ethiopia continues to rely heavily on hydropower and is also exploring other renewable options.

 

The growing interest in battery storage is another important development.

 

Renewable energy sources such as solar and wind do not produce electricity at the same level throughout the day. Solar generation falls after sunset, while wind generation can change with weather conditions. Batteries can store electricity when production is high and release it when demand rises.

 

Malawi, for example, commissioned its first utility-scale battery energy storage system in 2026, supporting the country’s efforts to improve the reliability of its electricity supply. Such projects could become increasingly important as African countries add more solar and wind power to their grids.

 

There is also a growing opportunity for local manufacturing.

 

Africa currently imports much of the equipment needed for renewable energy projects, including solar panels, batteries and components. But as demand increases, some countries are exploring ways to build local manufacturing and assembly industries. That could create jobs while allowing African economies to capture more value from the renewable energy transition. It could also develop skills in engineering, electrical installation, manufacturing and maintenance.

 

However, Africa’s renewable energy journey still faces significant obstacles.

 

Financing remains one of the biggest challenges. Renewable energy projects often require substantial upfront investment, while investors can face currency risks, regulatory uncertainty and difficulties securing long-term financing. Electricity grids in many countries also require major upgrades to accommodate new generation capacity.

 

Producing more electricity is only useful if that electricity can reach consumers.

 

This means Africa will need to invest not only in solar farms, wind turbines and batteries, but also in transmission lines, distribution networks and modern electricity systems. Stronger regional power pools could also allow countries to trade electricity more efficiently and make better use of their combined resources.

 

Despite these challenges, the direction is encouraging.

 

Africa has the resources to build an energy system that is more diverse, reliable and increasingly powered by renewable sources. The opportunity is particularly significant for countries that have struggled with expensive fuel imports and unreliable electricity.

 

The benefits can be felt far beyond the energy sector. Reliable electricity can help factories operate for longer hours, allow farmers to process and store more of what they produce, help hospitals provide better services and give young people greater access to digital education and work.

 

Africa’s renewable energy story is therefore not simply about replacing one source of electricity with another. It is about building the foundation for a more productive economy.

 

The continent has spent decades dealing with an electricity deficit. With the right investment, stronger infrastructure and policies that encourage both public and private participation, renewable energy could help turn that long-standing challenge into one of Africa’s biggest opportunities.

 

From solar farms in the north to geothermal plants in the east and growing mini-grid networks across rural communities, Africa’s energy transition is already under way. The task now is to ensure that its benefits reach as many people and businesses as possible.
