Africa’s technology story is changing. For years, conversations about the continent’s digital economy were largely centred on mobile money, fintech and the rapid spread of smartphones. Those areas remain important, but a new generation of African companies is pushing into more complex fields, from artificial intelligence and drones to agriculture, healthcare, mobility and manufacturing.
What makes this development particularly encouraging is that many of these businesses are not simply copying solutions developed elsewhere. They are building products around problems they understand first-hand and creating technologies that respond to the realities of African markets.

Nigeria provides one of the latest examples. Terra Industries, a Nigerian defence technology company, recently raised $52 million in seed funding to expand its work in autonomous drones and artificial intelligence. The company is also planning to establish a large drone manufacturing facility in Ghana. The investment places the company among the better-funded young technology businesses emerging from Africa and highlights the growing interest in African-built technology.
The importance of this development goes beyond the company itself. It shows that African entrepreneurs are increasingly willing to enter industries that require advanced engineering, research and technical expertise.
Drones, for instance, have uses that extend far beyond defence. Across the continent, the technology is being explored for agriculture, mapping, infrastructure inspections, environmental monitoring and the delivery of essential supplies. A farmer can use aerial imagery to monitor large areas of farmland, while construction companies can use drones to inspect sites and track progress without sending workers into difficult or dangerous locations.
Artificial intelligence is opening another area of opportunity.
African businesses are increasingly experimenting with AI to improve everything from financial services and customer support to healthcare, education and farming. The continent’s large population and diverse markets provide a huge testing ground for entrepreneurs who understand local needs.
In agriculture, AI-powered tools can help farmers analyse weather information, identify crop diseases and make better decisions about planting and harvesting. In healthcare, technology can assist doctors and health workers with diagnosis, record keeping and access to information. In education, digital platforms are helping students reach learning materials that may not be available in their local communities.
These developments are taking place alongside continued growth in Africa’s wider startup ecosystem.
African startups have attracted billions of dollars in investment over recent years, although funding remains uneven and concentrated in a relatively small number of countries and sectors. Fintech continues to receive a large share of investment, but there is growing interest in climate technology, artificial intelligence, health technology, logistics and other industries. The expansion of homegrown technology also matters because of the jobs it can create.
A successful technology company does not only employ programmers. It needs engineers, designers, marketers, accountants, sales teams, researchers and managers. It also creates opportunities for other businesses that supply equipment, provide services or become customers.
For Africa’s young population, this could become particularly important. The continent has one of the world’s youngest populations, with millions of young people entering the labour market every year. Creating enough productive jobs will require more than traditional industries alone. Technology and innovation can become part of the answer.
But talent needs an environment in which it can grow.
Many African entrepreneurs still face difficulties accessing finance, reliable electricity, fast internet and affordable equipment. Expanding across national borders can also be complicated because businesses have to deal with different regulations, currencies and tax systems.
These challenges make regional integration particularly important.
The African Continental Free Trade Area could eventually give technology companies access to a much larger market without requiring them to build separate operations in every country. A startup that develops a successful product in Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana or Rwanda should ideally be able to expand into other African markets without facing unnecessary barriers.
Governments also have an important role to play. Policies that encourage research, protect intellectual property, improve digital infrastructure and make it easier for startups to access capital can help more young companies survive beyond their early stages.
Universities are equally important. Africa needs stronger links between academic research and industry so that promising ideas developed in laboratories can become products and businesses.
Perhaps the most important change, however, is the shift in perception.
Africa is increasingly being recognised not only as a market for technology but as a place where technology can be created. Entrepreneurs are developing solutions that are relevant to local communities while also attracting attention beyond the continent. From drones being developed in West Africa to AI applications emerging across different sectors, the range of African innovation is expanding.
The goal should not simply be to produce more startups. It should be to build companies that can survive, create decent jobs, solve genuine problems and compete internationally.
Africa has no shortage of problems that need solving, but it also has no shortage of people capable of finding solutions. With the right investment, infrastructure, education and policies, homegrown innovation can become one of the continent’s strongest economic assets.
The next chapter of Africa’s technology story may therefore be less about adopting what others have built and more about building what Africa needs and showing the rest of the world what African ingenuity can produce.
