An Egyptian farmer walks past his crops damaged by drought in a farm formerly irrigated by the river Nile, in El-Dakahlya, about 120 km (75 miles) from Cairo June 4, 2013. Ethiopia has not thought hard enough about the impact of its ambitious dam project along the Nile, Egypt said on Sunday, underlining how countries down stream are concerned about its impact on water supplies. The Egyptian presidency was citing the findings of a report put together by a panel of experts from Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia on the impact of the plan to build a $4.7 billion hydroelectric dam. Ethiopia triggered deep concern in Egypt last week when it began work to divert the river as part of the project. Egypt depends on the Nile for nearly all its water. Germany has recently committed over 13.5 million Euros to victims of drought in Ethiopia.

At a press conference, German State Secretary for Economic Cooperation and Development, Thomas Silberhorn, appreciated the efforts of the Ethiopian government to mitigate drought and its support to South Sudanese refugees.

The German government has accordingly contributed 10 million Euros to victims in the pastoralist areas of Afar and Somali regions, Silberhorn said.

In addition, 2 million Euros will be used for humanitarian and emergency support according to the priorities of the Humanitarian Requirements Document of the Government of Ethiopia.

The government of Germany supports the work of German Non-Governmental Organizations in building upon the needs spelled out in the national Humanitarian Requirements Document.

Thus Diakonie Katastrophenhilfe has received 518,000 Euros for emergency response to drought affected people in Afar region, it was learned.

Besides, Germany has allocated 1 million Euros to UNHCR to support its program to assist Sudanese refugees in Benishangul Gumuz refugee camps.

According to the state secretary, the government of Germany will continue its technical and financial support.
