As the CEO of Wegagen Bank, one of Ethiopia’s first-generation commercial banks, Dr Wubet has led a remarkable transformation marked by digital innovation, strategic expansion, and sustainable financial inclusion. Appointed to the role in 2021, he has driven the bank’s evolution by spearheading conventional and Sharia-compliant Interest-Free Banking (IFB) services, while also introducing innovative digital banking solutions tailored to Ethiopia’s fast-evolving market.
Under his leadership, Wegagen Bank has launched pioneering initiatives such as Wegagen Capital Investment Bank (WCIB), the first investment bank licensed by the Ethiopian Capital Market Authority. This milestone, achieved in March 2025 with an initial capital of ETB 358 million, has positioned Wegagen at the forefront of Ethiopia’s emerging capital market. Earlier in January 2025, the bank also became the first company to be listed on the Ethiopian Stock Exchange — a historic achievement that underscores its role in modernising the country’s financial sector.
Dr Wubet brings to the Summit more than three decades of experience across banking and insurance institutions, including senior leadership roles at Bank of Abyssinia, Lion International Bank, and Nile Insurance. A holder of a PhD in Public Management and Policy from Addis Ababa University, he is widely recognised for his integrity, strategic vision, and customer-focused innovation. He is also committed to advancing financial literacy, fostering talent, and building inclusive financial services that align with Ethiopia’s development goals.
Wegagen Bank’s growth under his tenure has been reflected in its strong capital base — now exceeding ETB 12 billion — and its creation of over 5,000 jobs, making the bank a key contributor to the country’s economic resilience.
Dr Wubet’s presence at the Africa Summit London will contribute significantly to conversations around financial sector transformation, digital banking in emerging markets, capital market development, and regional investment opportunities. His insights are expected to resonate across stakeholders looking to harness finance for inclusive growth and cross-border collaboration.
