Ghana Partners with Switzerland to Boost Cocoa Production

Ghana is seeking ways to boost its production of cocoa, and process more of the beans in the face of price fluctuation. In order to accomplish this, Ghana has decided to partner with Switzerland, president Nana Akufo-Addo said on Wednesday.

The country is one of the world’s largest producer of cocoa and top grower Ivory Coast which together account for more than 60 percent of the world’s cocoa supply has been affected by the drastic fall in the world prices.

“Ghana, under my presidency, will no longer become mere producers and exporters of cocoa beans, and will continue the policy of processing more and more of our cocoa,” Akufo-Addo told reporters after a meeting with Swiss President Doris Leuthard in Accra.

Ivory Coast responded to this problem by slashing the farmgate cocoa price by half while Ghana has maintained the price at which it purchases cocoa from farmers since the season opened in October.

“Ghana, under my presidency, will no longer become mere producers and exporters of cocoa beans, and will continue the policy of processing more and more of our cocoa,” Akufo-Addo told reporters after a meeting with Swiss President Doris Leuthard in Accra.
