President Sirleaf has officially launch the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Women’s Access to Information, which seeks to ensure the right to information as a fundamental human right and a foundational right incorporated in the Liberian Constitution, during a National Women’s Conference hosted by the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection in collaboration with the Women Legislative Caucus of Liberia, Women NGO Secretariat and the United Nations System and its partners at the Paynesville Town Hall outside Monrovia.

The President who commended all women that have worked over the years towards transforming the status of their peers, recounted several initiatives that led to progress made by women, including the establishment of the Federation of Liberian Women, which was further strengthened by the Liberian Women Initiative, the Liberian Women Political Forum and the first post-war National Women Colloquium held in May, 2009, which brought together women leaders from all over the world.

She acknowledged that although, traditionally, women face various forms of discrimination, Liberian women have proudly asserted themselves to become relevant and have contributed immensely to the nation at large. She also applauded particularly Liberian women in the informal sector whose economic vibrancy in agriculture, marketing, and domestic labor have kept the country afloat in normal and difficult times.

The President said as the world moves towards the implementation of the SDGs, Liberia has a duty to ensure that appropriate strategies and mechanisms are put in place to foster the attainment of Planet 2030, especially those goals which are crucial and relevant to achieving Gender Equality.

She urged all women to fully utilize the various organizations, structures and institutions to ensure that peace is maintained in the wake of UNMIL’s drawdown as Liberians take full responsibility of their country’s peace and security.
