  • 0

Somalia marked the 66th anniversary of the Somali National Army (SNA) with official ceremonies and nationwide commemorations, highlighting the military’s enduring role in safeguarding the nation and supporting state-building efforts. The celebrations in Mogadishu were led by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, who praised the armed forces for their continued sacrifices in defending the country, protecting civilians, and confronting extremist threats.

Speaking during a commemorative event that featured military parades and cultural displays, the President described the Somali National Army as a cornerstone of national stability and survival. He also announced the establishment of an Orphans Care Agency to support the families of fallen soldiers, acknowledging the human cost of Somalia’s prolonged security challenges and reaffirming the government’s commitment to those affected.

Senior officials, including Deputy Prime Minister Salah Ahmed Jama and Defence Minister Ahmed Moallim Fiqi, joined in commemorating the occasion, commending the military’s progress in recent years. The Defence Minister highlighted improvements in operational capacity, particularly along strategic routes such as the Mogadishu–Baidoa corridor, where security conditions have improved significantly.

The military leadership also used the occasion to reaffirm its commitment to national defence. Commander Brigadier General Ibrahim Mohamed Mahmoud described the force as resilient and determined, emphasising its expanding role in counterterrorism operations and civilian protection.

Observed annually on April 12, Somali Armed Forces Day commemorates the establishment of the Somali National Army in 1960. Over the decades, the institution has undergone repeated restructuring amid conflict, political instability, and reform. Today, it remains central to Somalia’s efforts to rebuild state authority and secure lasting peace.

Despite the significance of the anniversary, Somalia continues to face serious security challenges, particularly from the al-Qaeda-linked extremist group Al-Shabaab. For years, the insurgency has exploited governance gaps and instability to maintain influence in parts of the country. In response, the Somali National Army has remained at the forefront of efforts to reclaim territory, protect civilians, and restore government control.

In recent years, the armed forces have benefited from extensive reforms supported by international partners and regional allies. Training programmes, logistical support, and institutional capacity-building initiatives have improved operational effectiveness. These reforms have also strengthened coordination between federal and regional security forces, enabling more strategic and coordinated counterterrorism efforts across key regions.

Beyond combat operations, the military plays a vital role in stabilisation efforts within liberated areas. By securing towns and rural communities previously under insurgent control, the army creates the conditions needed for humanitarian assistance, infrastructure rehabilitation, and the restoration of essential public services. This stabilisation role is crucial to preventing the return of extremist influence and sustaining long-term peacebuilding efforts.

Even with these gains, Somalia’s path to lasting peace remains difficult. The military continues to face challenges, including limited resources, evolving insurgent tactics, and the need for stronger institutional capacity. These realities underline the importance of sustained investment in defence infrastructure, intelligence systems, and personnel development, alongside stronger coordination among security agencies.

Nevertheless, the resilience of the Somali National Army reflects the country’s broader determination to achieve peace and stability. Recent operations have resulted in important territorial gains and weakened insurgent networks in several regions. While these gains are still being consolidated, they represent meaningful progress in Somalia’s broader security transformation.

The role of the military is closely connected to wider governance reforms. Sustainable security is essential for democratic consolidation, economic recovery, and national reconciliation. Without a stable security environment, efforts to rebuild institutions and attract investment remain severely constrained. In this context, the Somali National Army serves as a foundational pillar for Somalia’s long-term development ambitions.

International cooperation also remains vital in strengthening Somalia’s security sector. Partnerships with regional organisations and global allies have provided strategic support, training, and equipment to bolster the military’s capabilities. At the same time, Somali authorities continue to emphasise national ownership of security reforms to ensure that long-term stability is internally driven and aligned with domestic priorities.

As Somalia reflects on this important milestone, the Somali National Army stands as a symbol of sacrifice, resilience, and national unity. The sacrifices made by service members reflect the heavy cost of insecurity, while their continued service represents hope for a safer and more stable future.

Ultimately, Somalia’s journey toward lasting peace will depend not only on military strength but also on inclusive governance, institutional reform, and social cohesion. The National Army remains central to that journey, helping to secure the foundations upon which sustainable peace and national development can be built.

At 66, the Somali National Army represents both Somalia’s endurance and its aspirations. Its continued efforts to protect the nation amid ongoing challenges demonstrate the critical role of security institutions in shaping the country’s path toward stability and renewal.
