Dr Aklilu Wubet, President and Chief Executive Officer of Wegagen Bank, Ethiopia, has been officially recognised as one of Africa’s Top 40 Finance Leaders 2026, receiving the prestigious Certificate of Listing from African Leadership Magazine. The honour was conferred during the Africa Finance Leadership Forum and the 16th African Business Leadership Awards (ABLA) 2026, held from 2–3 July at the House of Lords, London, United Kingdom.

Under Dr Wubet’s stewardship, Wegagen Bank has achieved landmark milestones that are reshaping the Ethiopian banking industry. Notably, the bank became the first private commercial bank to list on the Ethiopian Capital Market, marking a historic step in the nation’s financial market development. His commitment to financial inclusion is further demonstrated through the rollout of “Efoyta,” an uncollateralised digital lending platform specifically designed to empower women and micro-businesses with accessible credit.
On the international stage, Dr Wubet has successfully brokered a strategic partnership with the International Finance Corporation to enhance local trade finance capabilities, deepening Wegagen Bank’s global integration.
