Gambia: Diaspora community donates to Psychiatric hospital

The Tanka Tanka medical facility is the only psychiatric referral hospital in the Gambia.

· The medicine and printing materials are worth D15, 000.

· The materials were donated by the “No Health without Mental Health” organization with the aim of helping the hospital manage and run the day to day activities effectively.

Mustapha S. Minteh, spokesperson to organization explained that the gesture was made possible with the support of Gambian brothers and sisters in the diaspora who helped to raise the funds needed for the group.

He added that the organization was established in June 2016 with the main objective of supporting mental health, fight against discrimination and raise awareness of the communities on mental health. Stating that, being the only centre for psychiatric care in the country, all the organization could do is support them in any way possible.

Yankuba Suwareh received the items donated on behalf of the Matron of the hospital and expressed deep appreciation for the gesture which would be of great help to the clinic and its patients. He added that although the items may seem small to the eyes, hold worth as the drugs and injections are very expensive and promised to use the items judiciously.
