The Head of the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) in Kenya, Dr. Nancy Macharia, has announced that all teachers within the country and support staff in learning institutions are eligible to receive the Covid-19 vaccine irrespective of their age.

According to Dr. Macharia, so far 92,246 teachers in the basic education or primary sector have received the vaccine shot since the drive began last month, and this new development overrides an earlier directive which allowed only teachers aged 50 years and above eligible to receive the Vaccine from AstraZeneca.

“The President has allowed us to ensure that all teachers take the Covid-19 jab irrespective of their age” the TSC boss noted, putting out the information that every teacher can receive the jab in any of the 622 Covid-19 vaccination centres across the country as listed on the Commission’s website.

“We encourage all the teachers to come forward and receive the vaccine. It is now open to every teacher and not those only above 50 years,” she said.

The government’s efforts towards ensuring the safety of the education system in Kenya is of high priority and further steps which have been taken include allowing remote work for some teachers while making the teachers’ medical scheme cover Covid-19 related ailments in order to cushion the financial effects of most teachers having to pay out of their pockets.
