The Chairperson of the National Gender Equality Commission, Winfred Lichuma, has recently called for more consultations between stakeholders charged with the formulation of a legal framework for the realization of the not more than two thirds gender principle in political representation.
Speaking at a Law society of Kenya meeting organized by the council for legal education in Kisumu, she stated that civic education should be carried out to sensitize Kenyans on the opportunities that come with participating in the electoral process and thus bridge the marginalization of vulnerable groups such as women, youth, persons with disabilities and ethnic minorities.
Lichuma said fighting discrimination and inequality requires multiple strategies since attitudes and cultural practices act as barriers to the emancipation of special interest groups. Parliament is expected to enact a law to provide for a framework of realizing gender parity in the National Assembly and Senate after next year’s elections
