Eng. Mapani is a seasoned electrical engineer and energy leader with more than 25 years of experience across Southern Africa and the United Kingdom. He recently completed his tenure as Managing Director of ZESCO (December 2021 – December 2024), where he spearheaded extensive reforms that transformed the utility’s operational efficiency, financial standing, and service delivery to Zambians.
During his leadership, Eng. Mapani implemented wide-reaching initiatives, including significantly reducing ZESCO’s debt to Independent Power Producers (IPPs), rolling out cost-saving strategies, and advancing critical infrastructure projects such as the Kafue Gorge Lower hydropower project and the Chama–Lundazi grid connection. Notably, he led efforts to clear a longstanding backlog of 67,000 customer connections, ensuring improved access to electricity nationwide.
Passionate about renewable energy and sustainable development, Eng. Mapani accelerated Zambia’s clean energy transition through solar energy projects, thereby helping diversify the country’s energy mix. He also played a significant regional role as President of the Association of Power Utilities of Africa (APUA) from 2017 to 2022, advocating for electrification, green technology adoption, and knowledge-sharing among African power utilities.
His academic credentials include an MSc in Renewable Energy Systems from the University of Nottingham, with additional qualifications from institutions in Norway and Zambia. He is a Fellow of the Engineering Institution of Zambia and is a registered engineer in both Zambia and South Africa.
Eng. Mapani’s participation in the Africa Summit London will add depth to ongoing conversations around energy reform, renewable investments, and sustainability on the continent.
