The African Business Leadership Awards remain one of Africa’s most respected platforms for celebrating visionary leaders whose innovation, resilience, and commitment continue to advance business excellence, economic development, and social impact across the continent. The 16th edition is expected to convene an influential network of policymakers, business executives, investors, diplomats, development partners, and thought leaders from around the world.

Dr Mangudya assumed leadership of the Mutapa Investment Fund on 1 May 2024, following a distinguished decade-long tenure as Governor of the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) from 2014 to 2024. His appointment marked a new chapter for Zimbabwe’s sovereign wealth fund, which was reconfigured in September 2023 as the strategic investment arm of the Government of Zimbabwe. Under his stewardship, the Fund is responsible for providing strategic oversight across a diverse portfolio of thirty state-owned enterprises and investments that span critical sectors including energy, mining, infrastructure, agriculture, and aviation.

With a career spanning more than 38 years in central banking, commercial banking, and international finance, Dr Mangudya brings a rare depth of experience to his role. Before leading the RBZ, he held senior positions at Afreximbank and CBZ Bank, developing extensive expertise in development finance, trade finance, and institutional leadership. He holds a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Economics, as well as a Doctorate in Business Administration.

At the Mutapa Investment Fund, Dr Mangudya has articulated an ambitious vision centred on preserving and generating long-term wealth for Zimbabwe’s current and future generations. Among his key strategic priorities is a target to unlock value in strategic national assets with the objective of building a US$10 billion portfolio. He is also spearheading comprehensive corporate restructuring and revival programmes for major state-owned enterprises, exemplified by the resumption of direct Air Zimbabwe flights between Harare and London. Central to his mandate is the preservation and growth of employment, with efforts aimed at safeguarding over 24,000 jobs across the Fund’s portfolio companies.

Under his leadership, the Mutapa Investment Fund is guided by the cornerstones of transparency, accountability, and rigorous long-term planning. The Fund’s mission reflects a deep commitment to transforming Zimbabwe’s economy, improving living standards, and positioning the nation as a premier investment destination in Africa. While portfolio companies under the Fund’s administration once contributed above 40 percent of Zimbabwe’s Gross Domestic Product, that figure now stands at approximately 20 percent, underscoring both the scale of the challenge and the transformative potential of Dr Mangudya’s leadership.

As a featured speaker at ABLA 2026, Dr Mangudya will share valuable insights on sovereign wealth management, strategies for revitalising state-owned enterprises, attracting long-term investment into African economies, and the policy frameworks required to build resilient national wealth institutions. His perspectives are expected to contribute significantly to ongoing conversations around economic sovereignty, institutional reform, and sustainable development across the continent.

Speaking on his confirmation, the editorial board of African Leadership Magazine highlighted Dr Mangudya’s remarkable achievements and enduring influence on Zimbabwe’s economic trajectory.

“Dr John Panonetsa Mangudya exemplifies the calibre of experienced, forward-thinking leadership required to drive Africa’s economic transformation. Through his stewardship of the Mutapa Investment Fund, he is undertaking one of the continent’s most significant exercises in sovereign wealth building and institutional revival. His distinguished career, spanning central banking, international finance, and now sovereign wealth management, continues to inspire confidence among investors, governments, and development stakeholders. We are honoured to welcome him as both a distinguished speaker and honouree at the 16th African Business Leadership Awards,” the organisers stated.

The award recognises Dr Mangudya’s enduring commitment to economic stewardship, institutional transformation, wealth preservation for future generations, and the advancement of sustainable prosperity across Zimbabwe.

The 16th African Business Leadership Awards will feature high-level panel discussions, investment forums, policy dialogues, leadership showcases, and strategic networking engagements designed to strengthen partnerships and accelerate Africa’s economic growth and development agenda.
