Beyond Extraction: Kenya’s Critical Minerals Push Signals Africa’s Value-Addition Era

Africa’s critical-minerals story is entering a new phase. Across the continent, governments are increasingly looking beyond the traditional model of extracting resources and exporting them in raw form, towards building industries that capture more value locally.

 

Kenya is now positioning itself at the centre of that transition.

The United States has pledged to support Kenya in developing a critical-minerals processing industry, with particular attention on the development of the Mrima Hill deposit on the country’s coast. The site is believed to contain significant deposits of rare earth minerals and niobium, a strategic metal used in applications including aerospace manufacturing.

 

The development comes as competition intensifies globally for secure supplies of critical minerals needed for advanced manufacturing, renewable energy, electronics and defence technologies. Yet for Africa, the opportunity extends beyond supplying minerals to the global economy. It is about determining how much of the value generated by those resources remains on the continent.

 

Kenya’s emphasis on local processing is therefore significant. President William Ruto has highlighted the potential for responsible development of critical minerals to create jobs and expand domestic processing capacity, while US officials have expressed support for a model that incorporates local value addition.

 

For decades, Africa’s mineral wealth has often been associated with an uncomfortable contradiction: abundant natural resources alongside limited industrialisation. The next generation of mineral development provides an opportunity to change that equation.

 

Processing minerals domestically can generate employment beyond the mine itself, creating demand for engineers, technicians, logistics providers, manufacturers and specialised service companies. It can also encourage investment in infrastructure, energy and skills, strengthening wider industrial ecosystems.

 

The strategic importance of critical minerals makes this opportunity even greater. Rare earth elements and niobium are increasingly important to global supply chains, allowing resource-rich African countries to negotiate partnerships that support long-term economic transformation.

 

Kenya is not alone. Across Africa, countries are exploring ways to develop lithium, graphite, cobalt, manganese, copper and rare earth resources while strengthening domestic processing and manufacturing capabilities.

 

The challenge will be ensuring that investment produces broad economic benefits. Transparent licensing, strong environmental standards, community participation and predictable regulation will be essential to building investor confidence while protecting local interests.

 

Kenya’s Mrima Hill project is therefore about more than one mineral deposit. It represents a wider question for Africa: whether the continent can move from being primarily a source of raw materials to becoming a competitive participant in the industries built around them.

 

That transition will require capital, technology and international partnerships. But it will also require African governments to negotiate from a position of long-term strategic interest.

 

The global race for critical minerals is accelerating. Africa possesses many of the resources the world increasingly needs. The opportunity now is to ensure that the next mineral boom does not simply repeat the past.

 

Africa’s minerals can power the world’s industries. The greater ambition is to ensure they also power Africa’s own industrial transformation.
