Afrobeats superstar Wizkid made headlines this week with the premiere of his documentary “Wizkid: Long Live Lagos” at the Tribeca Film Festival 2025 in New York. The film, directed by acclaimed filmmaker Karam Gill, traces Wizkid’s journey from his Lagos roots to becoming one of the most influential figures in global music.

 

The documentary was directed by Karam Gill, a filmmaker and creative director. He is one of the most sought-after pop culture documenters and was recently featured on the Forbes 30 Under 30. According to him, ‘What Wizkid stands for is so much bigger than music, he is an artist that’s just changing how people look at Africa and shifts perception. This film is really about so much more than music.’ This narrative reinforces the idea that African artists are not just entertainers but cultural ambassadors shaping global narratives.

 

Tems to Perform at FIFA Club World Cup 2025

Nigerian singer Tems has been announced as one of the headliners for the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 halftime show, scheduled for July 13, 2025, at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. She will perform alongside international stars J Balvin and Doja Cat, marking another significant platform for Afrobeats visibility on a global stage.

 

She is a co-owner of San Diego FC, a Major League Soccer (MLS) club. She joined the club’s ownership group through her company, The Leading Vibe in February 2025, making her the first African female to join MLS ownership. Her involvement is in collaboration with Pave Investments.

 

Ayra Starr Wins Big at BET Awards — With Some Controversy

Fela Kuti & Afrika 70’s album “Zombie,” released in 1976, has been inducted into the 2025 Grammy Hall of Fame. This recognition highlights the album’s significance as one of the most iconic recordings of the 20th century. The induction signifies the lasting impact and cultural influence of “Zombie” on music history. This award acknowledges the album’s artistic merit and its contribution to shaping musical trends across Africa and beyond.

 

This week, the Recording Academy revealed its list of inductees, celebrating recordings of at least 25 years of age with significant artistic, historical, or cultural impact. Joining the ranks of iconic albums from global music legends—including Jackson 5, Jay-Z, Santana, and Cat Stevens—is Fela’s Zombie.
